Guildford show Hammer the way

Hammer United 1, Guildford City Weysiders 4
(Surrey Intermediate League Division 1)
Saturday 13th September 2008

Today’s team was one of our strongest it was been for a few years now, still with Alan Carey and Jon Scammell to come back. Adam North was on the bench today after being out for 10 weeks.

The lads started the game on a mission and with a big point to prove, still gutted at dropping two points last week. Andy Toner was man of the match, his efforts in mid field causing all kinds of trouble against a very unfit Hammer side. Toner was a different class all round today.

It did not look like Hammer had done much work pre-season, a shame really because there are some nice guys over there. In contrast, every Weysider player today wanted the ball, competing hard to win first and second ball, and playing simple ball-to-feet football the way they were facing, making Hammer do all the running around.

The goals came from great build-up play, with the ball being played through the home defence for all three of our forwards to get on the end and score. Vinnie Alexander played a one-two with their keeper for his first. Jason Michael got on the end of a ball from Toner to make 2-0. We had a moment of madness to allow them to get one back, which Phil Wilds flagged offside, but as the camaras were fixed on the rare sun in Hammer, we will never know.

Following a little chat from boss Nick Collis Derek Purchese and Justin Horner, we hit back with an Alexander second to make it 3-1. The second half was all about Guildford showing Hammer how to play football. Sadly, the bad news started coming out from Hammer: late tackles, swearing, not good to watch.

Tony Ney only had one save to make - a nice quiet half for him!

The standards have been set now by the players. Long may it last. There was only the one goal in the second half - a nice through ball which Dave Gould controlled well and went round the keeper to slide it home for 4-1. Overall we are very pleased with them all. I will just add that Tony Ney is so much more stronger already this year and he can only get better.
